Fortune Teller - Fake or Fiction

  • Yes, they both mean the same thing.  Magicians call this trick mentalism.  Gypsies call it fortune telling.  Psychologists call it reading the signs, body language, and words.
When I was younger I always wanted to go to a fortune telling and have her read my future.  I purchased Ouiji boards like crazy and WISHED that they were true.  When I turned 18 My mom took me on a vacation to Vegas where we found a fortune telling.  You can’t imagine my excitement.  But at the same time I was experiencing extreme skepticism.  I had been learning physics, math, and psychology in college, and learning magic tricks in my spare time.

When I went in, she almost immediately started talking to me and asking questions.  Just general information, how are you, what do you do, etc.  All things that can give her an insite into my personality.  I found her questions to be very specific only for her to eventually give me a broad answer.  Or statements like, I see love in your future.  Very near.  But when I asked specific questions like, when in the very near, she would respond with do you know a man with brown hair?  Well yes, I do… and she would say, well watch him.

There are many tricks to fortune telling.  Like the Specific question with broad answer.  Finding love in the near future could mean days months or years.  And she did not specify that it would be a person or a thing.  It could be anything, and when found, you would think back to her statement and think, “oh my! she was right!” Yes, well when you are that broad, you will be 95% of the time!  Another trick she used was watching my movements.  As long as I was fidgeting she would be changing the subjects, or moving quickly.  But when I stopped because I was listening, she knew she was on the right track, and stopped when I started moving again.  The other trick is having listened very closely to every word you said to her as she spoke to you upon entering.  All those things before the reading started.  She started “reading” you before it even started.

My advice about readings is take it only for what it is, entertainment.  Don’t put stock into what your psychic says.  In the end you are the one in control of what happens to you and how you see it.
