I did tarot readings for people on a phone line for a few years as well as in person. People often asked me how I was able to read cards for people over the phone since they were neither selecting their own cards nor in my presence. I relied on the vibrations from their voices primarily. I paid attention to pitch, pauses and hesitations and their energy level. I always tried to block out everything from my mind except the voice of the caller.

Once the cards were selected, I would begin the phone tarot reading based on the cards as I saw them and knew them. I did not attempt to alter any meanings to fit the caller but simply wove my reading around the cards. It is important to remain true to the cards as your credibility is always challenged if you begin altering a reading midway or retracting statements.  I always advise readers to start slowly and concentrate before charging into a phone tarot reading only partially prepared.

If you find that a person is not responding to your reading and contradicts everything that you say, remind them that this is a reading for the future and that predictions you are making will come to pass unless the client makes drastic changes in his life. Sometimes a person is not aware of the power another person is exerting over his life such as a difficult coworker or a secret admirer. I always try to describe such a person in terms of character traits primarily and not hair color or height. I also make sure to mention that the cards are “unbiased” and wish to give the client information to help them with life.

I had an experience with a woman caller where despite the fact that I told her that her husband would be getting a better job and she would be moving to a nicer home, she refused to believe me. She cited her husband’s lack of education and inability to read well. I told her the cards were such that this would not be a factor and a benefactor would overlook his shortcomings.

Within two weeks she called me back saying her husband’s boss had fired a supervisor and offered him the job with a substantial pay raise. He had quickly accepted and the first thing he said they would do would be look for a larger house to rent.

That is why I recommend making a client aware that the cards are seeing the whole picture and beyond what he or she assumes and they are expressing themselves.
